These Curls Ain’t Loyal
When asked about the products that I use on my hair, I start to comb the recesses of my brain. Why, because I am not brand loyal. Right now under the sinks in my bathroom I have the following brands: Shea Moisture (pronounced “shay”), Joico, Carol’s Daughter, and CHI to name a few.
I will say that most of my go-to products are Shea Moisture products, so I guess that’s my preference. While in CVS one day, I stumbled upon their African Water Mint & Ginger shampoo and conditioner. I was there to redeem my birthday discount and needed to buy some products so that I could earn some money back. I took one whiff of the exhilarating peppermint-reminiscent Water Mint, and I knew that it was coming home with me. As I type this, I am sitting under my hooded dryer doing a steam treatment with the Water Mint conditioner.
The Benefits According to Shea Moisture
Here is a list of the key ingredients in the Water Mint shampoo and conditioner and their proposed benefits. From the product details:
- African Water Mint boosts energy and enhances scalp circulation to promote healthy looking hair. Rejuvenates and refreshes for an invigorating experience.
- Opuntia Extract is a multi-tasking cactus extract that contains powerful water-binding properties to instantly soothe and rehydrate the hair and scalp.
- Ginger is loaded with antioxidant properties as well as circulation-stimulating, detoxifying, compounds. Helps keep skin purified.
- Activated Charcoal absorbs oil and impurities to help detoxify and soothe.
This particular shampoo and conditioner is supposed to detox and refresh the hair and scalp, according to the label. The refreshing part of the product is the sensation that you get from the mint. It feels to your scalp what a Peppermint Patty is to your mouth. Never ate a Peppermint Patty. Okay, it feels like the same sensation that you get when you use a tea tree oil shampoo. Never used tea tree oil. Okay, it feels like eating a peppermint and then following it up with a drink of ice-cold water. Yeaah, it’s like that; very refreshing!
I noticed that my hair instantly felt softer as I was shampooing it. Now the conditioner was another story! The conditioner had the same refreshing sensation, but no slip (ability to make your comb pass through your hair) whatsoever! My hair would have never survived the detangling process with the conditioner alone, so I had to apply my deep conditioning Shea Moisture product on top of the Water Mint in order to detangle my hair. Overall, I can say that I like the product. Even after my hair has completely air-dried, it still feels refreshed and clean. I will definitely buy the African Water Mint & Ginger line again.
When I purchased the African Mint at CVS, I only picked up the shampoo. I picked up the conditioner from Ulta because they were having a Buy One Get One 50% Off promotion on Shea Moisture products. You can click the link here to get the deal online or just go into your local Ulta. I don’t know how long the promotion will last, so act fast if you’re interested, and don’t forget to sign up for their rewards program to save some dough! That’s another reason I made the purchase from them. Mama likes to save!
